I'm about to go in for hair removal at a pro spa. I feel like a bear coming out of winter hibernation!! What can I do to prep for my appointment so I get the best results? BTW, I always get ingrown hair from these early season treatments.

What can I do? - Gone Grizzly

Hello, Grizzly!

First off; Welcome to Spring! It is a good idea to prep for your appointment. Hair removal after hibernation can be a beast. Irritation and ingrowns are never fun, especially after a long, dark winter.

Here are a couple of things to consider:

Do not shave any area you're planning to have treated. For pro hair removal, your hair does need to be 1/4" long, at least. The wax or sugar paste needs something to grab hold of to get an effective removal. You could trim the area with clippers if it's super long, but check with your estititian first.

You'll get the most effective and efficient service if your skin is properly exfoliated. Dead skin buildup can block the wax or sugar from really getting a good grab on the hair shaft.

How to properly exfoliate? It's a daily need, not a one-time deal. Dead skin is building up every day. Hair is growing back daily and can cause rash and itching. Exfoliation is easy to work into your daily routine. Dry brush skin in targeted areas in the morning and apply a treatment spray just before bed. It should only take 3-4 seconds at each end of your day. Get a 2 to 4-month duo system, all in one package, with Bikini Kitty. Also available for guys with Dirty Dog.

Step 1: Dry brushing for physical exfoliation does wonders. I love this action as it also helps with an immunity boost by stimulating your lymph system (pits and groin). Brushing will physically uncurl hair that may try to curl under the skin as it grows back. This also is excellent if your skin gets itchy when hair is growing back.

Step 2: AHAs like glycolic, lactic and citric acids along with a pore clearing BHA, like willow bark is exactly what you want to use to keep dead skin from building up and causing burmps or rash. Stay away from products with added fragrance or high alcohol content as that could be irritating and too drying. This spray is based in aloe.

Also, keep your bare skin (not bear skin!) hydrated with a fragrance-free lotion that will help with the pore-clearing action from BHA, willow bark.

Get great hair removal results and never suffer an ingrown hair again!

Q ~

I have tried to whiten my teeth with some success. I've even gone to a dentist for a pro treatment. I would really like to make them look whiter! It seems when I wear lipstick they almost look more yellow. I need some advice on choosing a lipstick.

Thanks in advance! - Pucker Up

Hello, Pucker!

Keep up the good dental habits, brushing, dentist visits, and such. There are many things, including makeup, that can help to make your teeth look whiter. Let's look at some of the optical allusions that can help and good habits to work into your routine.

Always, always, always rinse your mouth out with fresh water after you have coffee, tea or any other 'staining' food or drink. Of course, brush twice a day. My dentist recommends a remineralizing toothpaste for adults. This can help keep teeth strong and whiter as we age. This is her choice: Boka

Now on to some 'optical illusions' with makeup. If you lean toward trendy looks in lip colors like pale nudes, tan or bronze colors, this could be your issue. Warm colors, like these, will accentuate the yellow you might see in your teeth. Instead, go for cool colors. This will help pop the whiter, brighter look of your teeth. Go for colors like plum, red, and lighter pink.

To build a strong visual partner with the white you want to accentuate in your teeth, pump up the white of your eyes. Visually, a true black eyeliner will help the white of your eye look whiter. You can also use eye drops that help whiten your eyes. Try Lumify eye drops available at most drug stores. Put these drops in just before you hop in the shower and by the time you get out - magic! Your eyes will be brighter, whiter, and looking wide awake!
